We’ve always known Michigan wineries are winners, but here’s even more proof: Three wineries swept the top spots in the 2021 USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Wine Country Hotel and three were featured in Reader’s Digest’s list of the 25 Best Wineries in the United States.
In USA Today’s list, Chateau Chantal, located just north of Traverse City, won first place, with mentions of the inn’s “luxurious B&B lodging”, “exceptional views of vineyards or Grand Traverse Bay” and amenities including “fireplaces and sitting areas, plus an exceptional breakfast.”
Chateau Chantal CEO Marie-Chantal Dalese says it’s “a wonderful moment of recognition for us at Chateau Chantal to be listed among some of the best in the country, and a true honor for us Michigan companies to take the top three. It’s a joy to share our local beauty and delicious wines, plus a well-deserved thank you to all our staff who work diligently to make this business thrive.”
Hotel Walloon in Walloon Lake, within the Petoskey Wine Region, came in second.
“This boutique hotel in northern Michigan features just 32 guest rooms in a lakeside setting that’ll make you feel like you’re stepping back into the early 20th century,” USA Today wrote.
And the Inn at Black Star Farms in Suttons Bay took third.
“The Inn at Black Star Farms puts guests in the heart of the Traverse Wine Coast, with easy access to wineries and tasting rooms on the Old Mission and Leelanau Wine Trails,” USA Today wrote. “Each stay includes a daily breakfast, nightly hospitality hour with wine and small bites, a bottle of house wine and an exclusive barrel room tasting.”
The Inn at Black Star Farms and Hotel Walloon both made the list in 2020 as well, with Black Star Farms taking first place and Hotel Walloon placing fifth.
Chateau Chantal Winery and Black Star Farms also made Reader’s Digest’s 2021 list of the 25 Best Wineries in the United States, along with Petoskey Farms Vineyard & Winery.
The list was compiled by a food and travel writer for Reader’s Digest, and wineries were listed in no particular order.
Reader’s Digest writer Katy Spratte Joyce wrote of Petoskey Farms, “Petoskey Farms Vineyard and Winery is in Michigan’s newest AVA, the charmingly named ‘Tip of the Mitt.’ … Drink some wine — we particularly love the wine flight, which features three-ounce pours of five wines — and enjoy wood-fired pizza while overlooking the bucolic countryside.”
