‘Make Shelter at Home a Little Happier’: Bel Lago Adds Cheese

Have some cheese with that wine.

Bel Lago Winery in the Leelanau County community of Cedar has teamed up with a local artisan cheesemaker to offer a package to customers in this time of social distancing.

Bel Lago will send a half-pound of assorted Boss Mouse cheeses with a six-bottle order. Those who want 12 bottles get a pound of assorted cheeses. Shipping in either case is a penny.

Boss Mouse is a small craft cheese operation located just outside of Traverse City in the small community of Kingsley. While the company has temporarily suspended cheese-making with the coronavirus creating lower demand, owner Sue Kurta says her cheese cave is full as her products have been aging for several months getting ready for prime time.

“They’re all-natural rinds, made with local milk from Moomers Dairy in Traverse City and with vegetable-based rennet so they’re suitable for vegetarian people,” Kurta says.

Boss Mouse is providing Bel Lago with its Italian Montasio cheese, which comes in flavors that include Herbs de Provence and rosemary. Other possibilities include a traditional Res Leicester English cheddar and a best-selling Swiss.

“When it’s vacuum sealed, it’s quite stable for shipping,” Kurta says.

The promotion has taken off with cheese and wine lovers alike.

“For several years now, Bel Lago has carried my cheese in their tasting room in the summer months,” Kurta says. “Their tasting room is closed (due to the statewide shelter in place order), and they just called a few weeks ago with this idea to put this cheese and wine promotion together and it’s been a big success.”

As one person who received a shipment wrote on Bel Lago’s Facebook page, “You’re making shelter at home a little happier.”
